The project involved the refurbishment and extension of a two-storey, two-bay Victorian red brick house on a mature leafy road for a large family with small children. A large single-storey glazed extension was added to the rear Ground Floor of the house, a small red-brick room added to the side at First Floor level and a large basement dug into the rear garden.
The existing house was in relatively good condition but most of the upper rooms were re-configured to create a layout suitable for a large family. A new Master Suite was created along the entire depth of the house with a fitted dressing room and travertine-clad Master Bathroom beyond.
On the Ground Floor, a new sequence of spaces was created by opening up two adjacent Reception Rooms with a pair of very large doors matched by a further opening to the timber-framed sun-room beyond, leading in turn down a series of granite steps to the seating area in the rear garden.
The rear wall of the existing Kitchen was completely removed and the space extended out into the rear garden with a zinc roof and 1.5 x 3.5m single rooflight to bring natural light flooding deep into the plan of the house. The walls are of red brick to match the existing house with a combination of solid and glazed 3m high iroko panels, both fixed and sliding.
A large 7m x 14m basement was created in the rear garden to accommodate a Family Den and Gym. The basement stretches almost the entire width of the house and sits beneath the new extension and stone terrace with its own sunken courtyard to bring daylight into the space and give access to the garden above.
