House, Castlemount

Castlemount is a detached three bay one storey over basement Gothic revival castellated mid 19th century house with corner towers and crenallated parapet located on Tower Road, Castlemount, Co.Dublin overlooking Liffey Valley.

The challenge was to design an extension to the house whilst maintaining the strong features and characteristics of the building.  The intention was to design a modest contemporary intervention to the rear of the house which followed the steep sloping site stepping down the site to the South creating new living spaces and external terraces overlooking Liffey Valley.

The house itself was carefully restored and the Gothic arched tracery windows refurbished to their original quality.  The kitchens and family areas were relocated to the lower ground floor whilst the formal reception rooms were maintained on the entrance level.  The circulation staircase was re-located to the rear extension leading down to the glazed family areas and the external terraces, which flooed the lower level of the original house with natural light but afforded extensive views across the Liffey Valley and beyond.
